What Are The Rules?
Your pool must follow pool safety legislation, such as the NZBC Clause F9 and 162C of the Building Act. This law dictates that any project with a swimming area must have certain safety features in place, like fences and guardrails.
A fence must be installed and enclose an area containing water more than 400mm deep
It can have a complete isolation barrier (i.e. all four sides), or
Include parts of the house, and/or
Include boundary fences, but these have certain requirements.
The main goal of this policy is to keep unsupervised children out of the pool area and safe.
What Height Does A Pool Fence Need To Be?
Swimming pool fencing rules specify that a barrier at least 1200mm high must surround the pool. No protrusions or toeholds greater than 10mm should be present, and no gaps larger than 100mm should exist anywhere around the enclosure.
Gates must always swing outwards, and should have self-closing gate latches that are out of children’s reach, as well as self-locking mechanisms.

Your pool fence must comply with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987.
Your local authority needs to give approval prior to you filling your pool.
